Mathematics has changed the entire world and has given a contemporary
outlook but this progress won’t have taken place without the involvement
of some great mathematicians. They laid the foundation for some of the
basic and crucial mathematical concepts which in turn have made our
lives much smoother and comfortable.
Our list of top ten greatest Mathematicians of all time will be incomplete without mentioning the Greek mathematician and scholar, Archimedes who survived from 287 BC – 212BC. He was the person who gave the accurate approximation of Pi, using the method of exhaustion and several other notable mathematical concepts without which we could not imagine the functioning of modern mathematics.
#9 Leonardo Pisano Blgollo
Also known as Leonardo Fibonacci, Leonardo Pisano Blgollo lived from 1170 to 1250. He is remembered for introducing the Fibonacci Series to the western world and the Arabic numbering system.
#8 Alan Turing
Alan Turing is a mathematically challenged mind of the 20th century. During the Second World War, he formulated highly effective methods in breaking codes which had benefited in defining German Enigma Encryptions. He has also developed the Turing test which is used in evaluating the intelligence level of a computer thus proving him as one among the greatest mathematicians till date.
#7 René Descartes
René Descartes was a French Mathematician cum Philosopher who is famous for ‘Cogito Ergo Sum’ philosophy. Along with Newton he had provided help for the foundation of modern calculus. He survived from 1596 to 1650 and has developed the Cartesian Geometry, also known to many as the standard graph (Square grid lines, x and y axis). This progress has completely changed the way distances are measured. René Descartes is also the guy behind the use of superscripts to state powers in Algebra.
Believed to be as the first Mathematician, Pythagoras lived around 570 to 495 BC in Greek. Still he is credited for his role in fundamental maths especially the Pythagorean Theorem within trigonometry, which even today plays a key part in modern measurements and technological equipment. The theorem enhanced development of geometry the study of mathematics as a valuable venture.
